Deborah grew up in a Christian home in Bryson City. Her family attended First Baptist where she received Christ and was baptized around the age of nine. She received her BS degree in music education from WCU. During her years there she accompanied the university chorus and was organist for Cullowhee Baptist. After graduation, she accepted the position as organist at First Baptist in Franklin for two years playing their beautiful Shantz pipe organ.
Deborah moved to Asheville and completed 11 years of organ study with Dr. Marilyn Keiser at All Soul's Episcopal. She served at West Asheville Baptist for 30 years as organist/music assistant. By divine providence, the Lord led Deborah to Cornerstone Presbyterian in Brevard where she was pianist as well as director of the adult choir and later, a delightful children' choir. Here, she came to love and appreciate the PCA doctrines and as well as the spiritually "rich" services.
In addition to her church positions, Deborah taught music in the schools for a number of years. At Ben Lippen, she directed auditioned choral groups that toured, a handbell choir and taught piano. At Cherokee Elementary, she taught general classroom music. She widely expanded their program and was recognized by the principal and school board for "innovative teaching ideas".
Deborah is excited to be at First Presbyterian and looks forward with great anticipation to serving alongside the pastor as well as with many others, that God might be glorified and His purposes fulfilled.
